Access: Proceed North out of Phoenix on I-17. About 11 miles north of Phoenix, take the Carefree Highway exit (exit 223) and proceed East (right). You will cross Pima Road. Continue about another 5 miles to the Bartlett Lake turnoff, which is well marked. Take the turnoff and continue on the road, finally passing the Pay Station. (Note that you do NOT need to pay the user fee for running FR42.) Just after the Pay Station, take the left hand turn. A couple of miles down the road, you will see a sign for FR42. Take the left hand turn indicated by the yellow and black road sign. You will take the right hand fork at the Y that is about 1 mile down the road. FR42 is sporadically marked from here on. It is best to run it with someone who knows the way since you can get turned around fairly easy.

Trail: FR42 goes from Bartlett Lake to near Horseshoe Dam. This trail ends up back at the main road to Bartlett, so count on about a half day for travel time. It is located in low desert and so the summer time temps will easily hit 110+ degrees. As with all Arizona trails, bring plenty of drinking water. This can not be emphasized enough, even in the cooler months.

It is primarily sandy wash with many moguls and some good steep hills. The second half has the most challenges. Stock Jeeps with factory LSD can make it, but sometimes the trail conditions are worse, which just makes for more fun!

Tow hooks front and rear are needed. Unlocked rigs always seem to have problems on a few of these hills and strapping is often needed. Do yourself and your trail buddies a favor and make sure you have a strap to go with your tow hooks.
