Access: From Ft. Collins, CO take Hwy 14 west through Laporte. Look for signs for Rist Canyon Rd/52E. Take this west to Stove Prairie Road. Take Stove Prairie Road south a little over 4 miles and look for 44H Road heading west. 44H Road will take you to Moody Hill/Crystal Mountain (FR 513 & FR 132) as well as Ballard Road (FR 129).

Alternate Route: We left Fort Collins heading West around the South end of Horsetooth Reservior to the town of Masonville. At this point you can go South towards Hwy 34 or North towards Buckhorn Canyon and eventually Poudre Canyon. This is shorter and faster than going through LaPorte and up Rist Canyon especially if you are coming from Denver.

Trail: I went up Ballard Road on 9/23/00 in a stock 1990 GMC Sonoma which belongs to my friend Eric Dean. The trail is very easy and relatively free of rocks for the first portion of the trail. Several miles into the trail it does get a little rocky which is where I took the picture. For the most part, even a vehicle like the Subaru Forrester or Outback could probably make it without too much problem. The trail also turns into an OHV trail and gets very tight near the upper portion. It was starting to snow so we turned around and headed back down the mountain.

There were several bow hunters in the area since it's Elk season. The aspens along this section were very nice and it would be a nice easy trail to take the family on. Nothing too challenging.

We also went up Greer road which is farther West up Buck Horn Canyon and that is even easier than Ballard Road. Much of the same terrain with a lot of aspens.
